Requisites: Advisory: EWRT 200 and READ 200, or ESL 261, 262 and 263; MATH 210 or equivalent.

Description: Introduction-level application of Siemens NX in manufacturing models. This course covers solid modeling, assemblies and drawings.

• Student Learning Outcome: Create an entry-level Design Document Package which includes (as assigned) Solid Parts, Assemblies, and Basic Drawings for Parts and Assemblies, using Siemsns NX.


II. Course Objectives

A.Understand the basic menu structure and graphical user interface used within Siemens NX.
B.Achieve competency in creation of basic sketches.
C.Apply dimensions and constraints to sketches.
D.Learn basic techniques for creating “Sketched Features” and geometry.
E.Learn basic techniques for creating “Reference Features”.
F.Create and modify solid parts.
G.Create and modify solid assemblies.
H.Create and modify basic Engineering Drawings (derived from NX Solid Model).

V. Expanded Description: Content and Form

A.Understand the basic menu structure and graphical user interface used within Siemens NX.
1.Demonstrate use of Siemens NX toolbars and menu.
2.Create a new file, save a newly created or edited file, and open an existing file.
B.Achieve competency in creation of basic sketches.
1.Gain competency of sketch tools through basic exercises.
2.Define specific terms, such as Sketch Planes & Datum Features.
3.Create simple geometry using basic sketch tools.
C.Apply dimensions and constraints to sketches.
1.Apply dimensions and logical constraints to basic geometries.
2.Modify and/or delete sketch dimensions and constraints.
D.Learn basic techniques for creating “Sketched Features” and geometry.
1.Extruded and Revolved features.
2.Parametric “Sweep” and “Loft” features.
E.Learn basic techniques for creating “Reference Features”.
1.Hole Features and Shell Features.
2.Fillet and Chamfer Features.
F.Create and modify solid parts.
1.Adding overall dimensions and constraints to clarify design intent.
2.Edit and/or delete overall dimensions and geometric relationships.
G.Create and modify solid assemblies.
1.Add 3D parametric components to an existing assembly.
2.Add, delete, or modify geometric mate constraints within an existing assembly.
3.Delete or replace existing 3D components from an assembly.
H.Create and modify basic Engineering Drawings (derived from NX Solid Model).
1.Standard orthographic drawing layout for detailed drawings.
2.Section views and auxiliary views in mechanical drawing.
3.Assembly drawings using exploded views, item balloons, and parts lists.

B.34 CAD projects demonstrating progressive mastery of NX software
C.Reading from text (70% by page count) is required.

VIII. Methods of Evaluating Objectives

A.Accuracy and Completeness of assigned CAD projects.
B.Mid-term examination covering assigned video lectures, textbook reading, & basic CAD projects. Exam will be evaluated on completeness of solid modeling requirements.
C.Final Examination evaluating student’s comprehensive understanding of basic Siemens NX CAD modeling by means of accuracy and completeness of solid parametric models.
